Pokemon Crystal- Game Boy Color/ 3DS eShop Review
As we continue Favorites Month lets review my favorite Pokemon game growing up. My first Pokemon game may have been Pokemon Gold but when I got Crystal is when I truly loved Pokemon with animated sprites, day and night, breeding, and of course being able to be a girl.
You are a new Pokemon trainer sent out on an errand by Prof. Elm unfortunately while you're out a red haired boy steals one of the remaining Pokemon in the lab. It is up to you to teach him that the way to raise Pokemon comes from love not brute strength, while you explore both Johto and Kanto Pokemon Gym Leagues.
Pokemon Crystal plays the same as the first entry X for menu, A to select and B to go back and of course the D-pad to move. This game also features a phone, so you can contact trainers, your mom, and the Professor. You can also breed Pokemon by having 2 of opposite sex or 1 with a Ditto. I personally think the biggest improvement in Gen 2 is the fact the item pack is divided into pockets and not all in 1 menu where you must scroll forever to find the one thing you want.
To complete the Pokedex(which, I never bother to fully do as it would take forever, and I don't have anyone to trade with) you will have to travel between both regions, check for Pokemon at different times of the day and night, trading and of course the bug catching competition. There is now nearly twice as many as the last time so your work is cut out for you.
While I enjoyed this, and the fact you can travel through both regions it still doesn't top Pokemon Let's Go Eevee for me. I do find I didn't have to grind as much as I did in Pokemon Yellow as there is plenty of trainers and extra things to do to level up. I managed to finish most of the game(up to Red, but I find I don't have time to level up my Pokemon enough to beat him and still review a book series I have planned), in about 45 hours of gameplay.
The Johto League was rich with things to do, but I found the Kanto Region besides collecting badges didn't have much to do. I feel the Kanto Region was largely added on as an afterthought to Johto. Despite the minor details, I still greatly enjoyed this blast from the past.
